The historical Regatta is the main event of the Venetian rowing season, a unique discipline practiced in the world for millennia in the Venice lagoon. It takes place on the first Sunday of september, mainly along the Gran Canal and is one of the most spectacular and picturesque moments of city life. The event consists of two phases, the historical procession and the competitive regattas.

The historical procession takes us back a few centuries to relive the glories of the sixteenth century spectacular traditional harnessed boats, rowers and costumed gondoliers play the highest positions in the Republic of Venice, Doge and Dogaressa included, an exciting and sumptuous parade made up of history and beauty.

Copetitive regattas follow the historical procession, they represent the most important rowing event of the season. The most famous and exciting is the champion regatta on the gondolini that whiz along the Gran Canal to the finish line in front of the floating stage in front of the Cà Foscari Palace. The winners are considered real champions awarded by the greatest authorities of Venice, they will be held in great consideration among all the athletes of the oar throughout the year waiting for the next challenge.
